On December 26th, I experienced this with my elderly mother, starting at 9 AM.

The day before, I received a call while I was still on the plane regarding the pickup, but since there were no messages, I felt anxious. In the end, I called them at night. All other communications were via email, so I thought it would be better to receive important information through email.

The pickup from the Regency Hotel was at 8:05 AM, and we were the first ones. As people from various Asian countries boarded, it felt like we were traveling abroad, filled with a sense of exoticism.

Before boarding, we signed in at a small hut and received a photo of a whale as a special gift along with a simple pair of binoculars. We were fine, but there were others who hadn’t received theirs after boarding, and they were told they would be given them after confirming once we got off, so I recommend being proactive and collecting them before boarding.

The boat had two types of seating: one in the dark bow and another with large windows at the back. The back was filled with foreigners, leaving some Japanese families and a few foreigners seated in the bow where they couldn’t see outside. Since the view was blocked unless you stood up and the engine noise was very loud, many people ended up falling asleep.

Once we set sail, the boat started to sway, and about 15 minutes in, some people in the bow began to feel nauseous. It seems everyone took motion sickness medication before boarding, so those who are unsure should be prepared. Also, those prone to seasickness might find it easier to manage if they can see outside.

After a little over an hour, we could see the Kerama Islands, which was the spot, and the engine stopped, causing the swaying to worsen.

Wearing windbreakers and life jackets was recommended to avoid getting wet, but with the heat, everyone was sweating profusely. Moreover, the boat was dark and lacked ventilation, causing even those who had been fine until then to feel unwell.

Everyone hurriedly took off their outerwear. I also planned to change into a lighter down jacket when going out onto the deck.

If a whale had appeared at that moment, it would have lifted everyone's spirits, but nature doesn’t always cooperate.

We anchored for about 20 minutes, but no whales showed up, and many people felt sick. Even those in the back with a good view started to feel unwell.

However, it’s a bit strange to say, but there was hardly any smell, so it didn’t lead to others feeling sick as well. The provided etiquette bags were double-layered and plentiful, which was reassuring. For those worried, it’s better to bring water to rinse your mouth.

Those who were feeling very nauseous were taken to the back where the wind was blowing, and it seemed to help them a bit as they could see the scenery. About ten people were being assisted at the back that day.

We reluctantly moved to wait for the whales to appear, but there were no sounds even from the underwater microphone, and we had to give up and return.

Upon returning to the port, the group representative handed out one boarding ticket each. We didn’t receive one each, so I’m a bit worried about whether only one person can retry in case of a second attempt, or if everyone can. There was no mention of this.

I had heard that the chances of seeing whales are low until mid-January, and that turned out to be true.

It was disappointing that we couldn’t fully enjoy the whale watching tour.

12月26日午前9時開始を老齢の母と二人で体験しました。

前日のピックアップの連絡はまだ飛行機で移動中に一度電話をいただき、伝言等がないため不安でした。
結局こちらから夜に電話しました。
他の連絡は全てメールでいただいたので大事な連絡はメールが良いなあと思いました。

リージェンシーホテルのピックアップは８時５分で一番乗りでした。次々とアジア圏の方が乗り込み異国情緒漂い海外に観光したような気分でした。

乗船前に小屋の中で署名をしたり特典のクジラの写真と簡易双眼鏡をいただきました。
私達は大丈夫でしたが乗船してからもらってない方がいらして、降りたあとに確認してから渡すと言われていたので、乗る前に自分たちで積極的に受けとるのがお勧めです。

船は前方の暗い船底？と後方の広い窓の２タイプの座席があり、後方は全て外国の方で埋まってしまい船底の外が見えない席に一部の外国の方と日本人の何家族が座りました。景色が立ち上がらないと見えないのとエンジン音がすごく大きく話も出来ないので皆さん寝てしまう方が多かったです。

出航すると15分位から船底タイプの座席から吐く方が出るほど船は揺れました。皆さん乗船前に酔い止め薬はのんでいたそうなので自信がない方は覚悟が必用です。
また酔う可能性のある方は外が見える方が酔いにくいかと思います。

一時間少し乗ったところで慶良間諸島が見え、こちらがスポットだそうで、エンジンが止まり揺れがひどくなりました。

濡れたりしないようウインドブレイカー等の着用が薦められていますが、それと救命胴衣の着用でかなりうだるような暑さで、皆さん汗だくでした。
しかも船内は暗く風が通らないので、今まで大丈夫だった方まで具合が悪くなりました。

慌てて皆さん着ていたアウターを脱ぎました。私もデッキに出るときに着直そうと薄いダウンを脱ぎました。

ここでクジラが出現してくれたら皆さん気分が変わって良かったのだと思いますが、自然相手はそううまくはいきません。

20分ほど停泊しましたがクジラは現れず吐く方が沢山いました。
見晴らしの良い後方からもさすがに具合が悪くなる方が出ました。

ただし、変な話で恐縮ですが、皆さん量はあまりもどさないのか殆ど臭いがしなかったのでつられて具合が悪くなるようなことはありません。
用意されたエチケット袋も二重で枚数も沢山準備がありその点は安心できます。心配な方は口をすすぐお水は持参された方が良いです。

また酔いがひどい方は最後尾の風が当たる場所にスタッフさんに連れられていき景色も見え少しは楽なように見えました。
この日は10人くらい最後尾でお世話になっていました。

やむなく場所を移動してクジラの出現を待ちましたが水中マイクでも声もせず諦めて戻ることになりました。

港に戻りグループの代表に１枚ずつ乗船券を渡されました。一人１枚ずつはいただけなかったのですが万が一再チャレンジは一人だけなのでしょうか？それとも全員可能なのでしょうか？
記載がないので少し心配です。

1月中旬でないと見られる確率が低いと聞いてはいましたがその通りでした。

本当の良さは味わえないままのホエールウォッチングツァーになり残念でした。

I was really looking forward to seeing the whales, and I'm glad I got to see them. I wish I could have seen them a little closer. I felt it was a bit hot inside the boat. When we spotted the whales, everyone stood up at once, which felt a little dangerous. But overall, I was satisfied.

もう少し近くで見たかったですね。
船の中はちょっと暑かったと感じました。
クジラを発見した時にみんな一斉の方向に立つのでちょっと危ないと感じました。でも全体的に満足しました。

The summer in Rausu is often shrouded in deep fog, and unfortunately, we were unable to see any whales. We ran out to sea in the cold and drifted for a long time waiting for a whale to appear, but in the end, none showed up. We did encounter a pod of dolphins, though. Meeting a single whale in the vast ocean might be a miracle, but still, it's incredibly disappointing.

羅臼の夏は霧が深く立ち込めるようで、残念ながらクジラを見る事は出来ませんでした。寒い中沖まで走り、長いこと沖を漂流しながらクジラが現れるのを待っていましたが、結局現れませんでした。イルカの群れには逢えたのですが。大海原で一頭のクジラに出会う事など奇跡なのかもしれませんが、それにしても残念で仕方ありません。

I participated on a sunny day in early July. The ship was large, so the rocking wasn't too bothersome, and since the sea was calm that day, it was a very comfortable cruise. However, the perceived temperature in the northern sea is low, and without a thicker layer of clothing, the wind on the water can feel quite cold, so I recommend bringing a jacket (they also provide rentals on board).

Before departure, I was told that the chances of seeing orcas or whales weren't very high, so I wasn't expecting much and thought I would just enjoy the beautiful Shiretoko mountains and Kunashir Island from the sea. To my surprise, I encountered orcas, whales, and even dolphins! It might be rare to be this lucky, but the crew coordinated with other boats to search for them and even used a microphone in the water to listen for whale calls, so I’m really glad I participated!

The sight of the whale raising its tail and diving into the sea was truly moving! It was the best experience of my trip to Shiretoko! I couldn't capture it at all with my smartphone camera, though!

7月初旬の晴れた日に参加しました。船は大きい船で揺れはそれほど気になりません、また参加した日は海も穏やかだったので非常に快適なクルーズでした。ただ、やはり北の海の体感温度は低く少し厚手の防寒がないと海上の風がかなり冷たく感じますので1枚上着を持ってくことをお勧めします。（船上でも貸してくれます。）
出発前はシャチもクジラも会える確率はそれほど高くないとのことだったのであまり期待せず海上から綺麗な知床の山々と国後島でも見ようかと思っていましたらなんとシャチもクジラもさらにイルカにも出会えました！！こんなにラッキーなのは珍しいのかもしれませんが、海上で他の船と連携をとって探してくれたり海の中にマイクを入れてクジラの声を聞いたりして探してくれていたので本当参加して良かったです！
特にクジラが尾っぽをあげて海へ潜る様は感動ものです！！知床旅行で1番いい経験でした！
さすがにスマホのカメラでは全く取れませんでしたが笑

I've loved orcas since I was a child and was captivated by their presence at aquariums. When I learned that I could see wild orcas from a boat in Shiretoko Rausu during this season, I finally made the visit. The Hamanasu boat is large, and they provide warm jackets for passengers (the waters around Rausu can still be cold even in early summer), making it comfortable. Unfortunately, the weather that day was foggy, and I was worried about whether we would see any orcas. However, suddenly, a nearly 2-meter tall male orca's dorsal fin appeared on the surface! Other male and female orcas also showed up! Swimming in the calm waters of Shiretoko, the black and white orcas near the boat were breathtakingly beautiful and majestic. Yet, their playful behavior as they swam alongside each other conveyed the affection they have for their families, which was incredibly endearing. Although it was unfortunate that the weather was not clear, if it had been sunny, we would have been able to see the orcas against the backdrop of the snow-capped Shiretoko mountain range or the silhouette of Kunashir Island. It was truly a precious experience that could be called a "miraculous encounter." I definitely want to go again!

子供の頃からシャチが大好きで水族館で見る姿にくぎ付けでした。知床羅臼で自然のシャチをこの時期、船から見る事ができると知り、やっと訪れることができました。はまなすさんは船も大きくて、防寒ジャケットも船で貸してくれ（羅臼の海は初夏でもまだ寒いです）快適です。この日は天気が生憎の霧模様で、遠くまで見えない為シャチに会えるか不安でした。ですが、突如、海上に現れた２ｍ近くの大きなオスのシャチの背びれ！その他にも別のオスシャチやメスのシャチも現れてくれました！！知床の穏やかな海の中、船のすぐそばで泳ぐ白黒カラーリングのシャチは息を飲むほど美しく雄大です。ですが、仲間と並走して泳いだり、遊んだりする姿は、なんとも可愛らしく、家族を大切にするシャチの愛情が伝わってきます。この日は残念でしたが、晴れていれば、雪を頂く知床連山、もしくは国後島のシルエットを背景にシャチの姿を見る事ができるでしょう。まさに『奇跡の出会い』とも言えるような貴重な体験でした。またぜひ、行きたいと思います！

I participated at the end of the year, but unfortunately, I didn't see any whales. After returning, I asked a diver acquaintance, and they told me that whales are rarely seen in December. It seems that most whale watching tours organized by diving shops start around the second week of January. I thought it might be a bit early, so I wasn't too hopeful, and it can't be helped!

We ventured out to about the area shown in the photo. It was quite far, so I'll just consider it as part of the cruise cost.

The boat rocked quite a bit, probably due to the winter weather. Since the journey was long, there were many people sleeping... There wasn't really a sense of "We might see whales! We need to keep an eye out!" throughout the boat. I got the impression that there were many participants from China.

年末に参加しましたが、クジラは見られませんでした。。
帰ってきてから知り合いのダイバーに聞いたところ、12月はほとんど見られないそうで、ダイビングショップなどが開催しているホエールウォッチングツアーは1月2週目くらいからのスタートが多いのだそうです。
ちょっと時期が早いかなとダメ元だったので、しょうがないです！
だいたい写真のあたりまで遠征していました。そこそこ遠いので、クルーズ代だと思うことにします。

船は冬のせいかけっこう揺れました。
移動が長いので、寝ている人が多かったかも…「クジラが見られるかも！よく見てないと！」という感じは、船内全体としてなかったかなぁ。。
参加者は中国の方が多かった印象でした。

I was able to see wild whales for the first time. There weren't any flashy movements like jumping, but at one point, a baby whale came very close and swam right under the boat, which was an incredible sight. The appearance of the whale was fleeting, and I couldn't take any still photos, but I kept the video rolling, and it turned out clear, so that was great.

初めて野生のクジラを見ることが出来ました。ジャンプなどの派手な動きはありませんでしたが、一度子クジラが最接近して、船の底をくぐっていったところは目前に見えて感激しました。クジラが現れるのは一瞬で、スチール写真は全く撮れませんでしたが、動画を回しっぱなしにしたら、はっきり写っていたので良かったです。

Unfortunately, I was unable to see any whales, and since it was the end of the year, there was no refund available.

Well, that was within my expectations, so it’s fine, but when I tried to use the re-boarding ticket I received to try again in March, I was told, "You only have one re-boarding ticket, so please pay the rest in cash."

If that’s the case, I wish they had told me to get enough re-boarding tickets for everyone at the end of the last trip.

残念ながらクジラは見ることはかなわず、また年末であったため返金もありませんでした。

まあそれは想定内だったので構わないのですが、再乗船券を頂いたので、3月にチャレンジしようとしたところ、"再乗船券が1枚しかないので残りは現金で支払ってください"と言われました。

それであれば、前回の終了時に人数分再乗船券を取るように言って欲しかったです。

I have been whale watching both domestically and internationally, but this time felt like a miss. Whales are part of nature, so it's understandable. The mother and calf were nice to see. The boat's equipment was average. The crew was young, and I thought their explanations for the international guests were good, but I felt something was lacking. I would have liked more information about the whales, such as being able to hear their calls before we spotted them. For the next time, maybe I'll try a different boat?

今まで、国内外含め、ホエールウォッチングしてますが、今回はハズレって感じ。
クジラは、自然のものなので仕方ない。親子連れは良かった。船の装備は普通。
クルーが、若く、海外の方への説明などは、良かったと思うのですが、何かもの足りなさを感じました。クジラの説明とか、出るまでのクジラの声を聞けるとか、もう少し欲しかったと思います。次回の参加は、別の船⁈

I could clearly see it! The sight of a whale! We started from Chatan Port on a cruiser with about 25 people, and the boat was going quite fast. There were already about eight other whale-watching boats around. After about 20 minutes, a whale appeared near the boat, breathing and diving, and we saw its tail right in front of us. I was very busy taking photos and videos. (laughs) It was an incredibly fun experience.

はっきり見えた！クジラの姿！北谷港よりクルーザーで２５人位の乗船でスタートかなりの船のスピードです。もう他のクジラウォッチングの船も８隻ほど来ていました。２０分ほどで船の近くにクジラが現れ息して潜り、目の前に尾びれです。カメラ・ビデオ撮影に大忙しでした。(笑)すごく楽しい体験でした。

I was surprised by the intensity of the swaying.

It seems there was a child who got so close that the captain said, "This one is friendly, it's too close!" However, I couldn't clearly see its figure from the boat, but I was able to see its tail above the water and the spray. It was moving.

Motion sickness medication is a must!

揺れの激しさには驚きました。

キャプテンが『コイツ人懐こい、近すぎてヤバイ』と言ったほど、近くまで寄ってきてくれた子がいたようですが、船の上からハッキリとその姿を見ることはできませんでしたが、
水面から出たしっぽや、潮をみることができました。
感動します。

酔い止め必須！

It was absolutely amazing!
I ended up taking a total of four boat rides.
I couldn't see the majestic humpback whales up close,
but I got hooked on whale watching.

もう最高です！
合計４本船に乗ってしまいた。

間近で見ることは出来ませんでしたが
ホエールウォッチングにはまりました。

It was absolutely amazing!
The sight of the humpback whale was impressive,
and since it’s partly about luck, I didn’t get to see it very often.
Still, aside from the two reservations I made here,
I ended up going on a total of four boats,
and although they were small, I was able to see the whales.
I want to come back for a revenge trip next time.
By the way, I went from February 1st,
and it was already summer in Okinawa.

もう最高です！
迫力のあるザトウクジラの姿は、
半分運があるので、中々見れませんでした。
それでも、ここで２つ予約した以外
合計４本船に乗ってしまい、
小さいながら、クジラの姿を見ることは
出来ました。
また今度リベンジで行きたいと思います。
なお、2/1から行きまして、
沖縄はもう夏でした。

The young and lively staff members were on board, and the staff who accompanied us on the boat were desperately searching for whales. It seemed like we might have seen a tail or a spout... something like that. However, just experiencing the sea and wind of Okinawa made it worth participating.

On the day we boarded, the sea was quite rough, and many people were exhausted on the way back. Since we participated in January, the wind was cold, so I think long sleeves are a must during this time. But that's nature, so it's something we have to accept. I hope we can see more clearly next time.

若くてイキイキしたお兄さんたちがスタッフで、船に同乗してくださったスタッフの方は必死にクジラを探してくださっていましたが、シッポ？が見えたような…潮吹き？が見えたような…そんな感じでした。でも沖縄の海や風を体感できるだけでも参加する価値はありました。
私たちが乗船した日は、とにかく海が荒れてて帰りはグッタリな方々も多かったです。
また参加月が１月でしたので、風が冷たくこの時期は長袖は必須だと思います。
でもそこは自然ですので、仕方ないことですよね。
次回はしっかり見られるといいな。

Previously, I participated in tours around Kerama, but this time I stayed in Onna Village and traveled with children, so I joined this tour departing from Chatan. It was a great decision. After boarding, we spotted a whale in just about 15 minutes! The staff mentioned it was the shortest time they've experienced (laughs). Although we didn't see any jumps this time, we were able to watch the whales slowly, and I was very satisfied. The boat didn't sway too much, but it seemed like there were quite a few people feeling unwell (￣0￣;). I recommend taking motion sickness medication early before participating.

今までは、ケラマの方のツアーでしたが、今回は恩納村に宿泊していたのと子連れの旅だったので、北谷発のこちらのツアーへ参加しました。
大正解です。乗船してから、わずか15分くらい？でクジラを発見！スタッフの方も今まで最短と(笑)今回も、ジャンプは見れませんでしたが、ゆっくりクジラを見ることが出来ました、大満足です。
あんまり、揺れなかったのですが、意外と具合の悪い人が多かったような(￣0￣;)酔い止めは早目に飲んでの参加をお薦めします。

The weather was nice, with a blue sky and blue sea. From the bow of the boat, I saw the white spray of a whale, its large black body, and its tail fin, which was incredibly exciting. We chased the whale with the boat, and I was able to see its body several times. The boat rocked, but it was great.

天気が良く、青空、青い海。船の舳先からクジラの白い潮、黒の大きな身体、尾びれが見えて大興奮しました。船で追いかけ、何回か身体が見えてました。船は揺れましたがよかったです。

I took motion sickness medication 30 minutes before, but I ended up feeling quite seasick. Other boats gathered at the spot, and we were able to observe wild whales. I was able to see the whales' blows and dorsal fins, which made it worth participating. However, I noticed that several Korean women were extremely seasick and probably couldn't observe the whales at all.

３０分前に酔い止めを飲んでおいたのですが、かなり酔いました。
ポイントには他船も集まり、自然のクジラを観察することができました。
クジラのブロウと背ヒレを見ることができ、参加した甲斐がありました。
ただ、韓国の女性が数人ひどく酔っていて、ほとんど、クジラを観察できなかったのではないかと思いました。

The tour company is not at fault, but this is my honest opinion.

I haven't experienced much seasickness on this type of tour before, but just in case, I took a motion sickness pill that was sold at the reception for 500 yen. Even so, I still felt quite nauseous. From what I could see, there were actually fewer people who didn't throw up. Because of that, I was able to throw up without hesitation, which slightly improved my condition, but...

I did see the whales and their spouts, but honestly, it wasn't enough to make up for the discomfort of seasickness. I think there were many people who were so sick that they hardly saw the whales.

If you're planning to include this in a short stay in Okinawa, I think it's important to carefully consider and prepare for it.

ツアー会社に非はありませんが、正直な感想です。

今までこの手のツアーであまり船酔いをしたことはなかったのですが、念のため受付で販売していた１本５００円の酔い止めを飲みましたが、それでもかなり酔いました。
パッと見ですが、吐いていない人の方が少ないくらいの状況でした。
そのため気兼ねなく？吐くことが出来て、少し体調が改善されたのは良かったのですが・・・

クジラの姿も潮吹きも見ることが出来ましたが、船酔いの辛さを帳消しにするほどの感動はなかったというのが率直なところです。船酔いがつらくてクジラをほとんど見ていない方も多かったと思います。

短い沖縄滞在の日程に組み込む場合には、よく検討して対策を練った方がいいと思いました。

About 10 minutes after departure, we were lucky enough to encounter a whale. I was moved to see its dorsal fin clearly and to be able to gauge the size of the individual. After that, we were able to see the blow and the tail fin protruding from the surface of the water from a distance several times. We returned to the port much earlier than scheduled, but I think the other passengers had no objections due to the high waves, the cold, and the ample opportunity for observation.

There was a sale of motion sickness medication at the reception, but I think it's better to prepare your own and take it in advance with plenty of time. It seems that on some days, 30 out of 40 people can get seasick.

出発してから10分ほどで運良くクジラに出会えました。背ビレがハッキリと、個体の大きさもはっきり分かるまで見れて感動しました。その後は遠方でブロウと水面から突き出たお 尾ひれをたびたび見ることができました。予定よりもかなり早い時間に港へと戻りましたが、高い波と寒さと充分に観察できた感で、他の乗客も異存がなかったかと思います。
受け付け時に酔い止めの販売がありましたが、自身で用意して時間にゆとりをもって事前に服用しておいた方がいいと思います。40人中30人が船酔いでヘタる日もあるようです。

The boat shakes a lot until you reach the whale sighting location. If you get seasick, it might be quite tough... but it's worth enduring. When you spot a whale in the incredibly vast ocean, it's truly moving. It became a wonderful memory of Okinawa.

くじら出現場所に到着するまでは船がとにかく揺れます。船酔いする方は相当苦しいかも・・・でも我慢する価値あり。物凄く広大な海にくじらを発見したときには、めっちゃ感動しますよ。沖縄の良い思い出になりました。

I saw a whale! Just a few glimpses of its back. However, it seems that it's difficult to spot them during this season, and there was quite a bit of time spent searching for the whales. The waves were also high (according to the captain, the sea was calm that day), so about one-third of the people couldn't see the whale due to seasickness.

くじら、見えました！背中を数回ですが。
ただ、時期的に見つけるのは難しいらしく、クジラを探している時間がけっこうあり、波も高い（船長さん曰く当日の海は穏やかだったそうです）ので、1/3ぐらいの人は船酔いでクジラを見ることはできなかったようです。

I saw whales about three times from a distance. This is just luck, so it can't be helped.
My mother (who usually doesn't get motion sickness) was feeling exhausted from seasickness in the second half, but the 4-year-old was energetic. The 0-year-old was seated in a stroller wrapped in a life jacket, sleeping without crying.

くじらは3回ほど遠くに見えました。これは運なので仕方ないですね。
母（普段乗り物酔いはしない方のはず）は船酔いで後半ぐったりしていましたが、4歳児は元気でした。0歳児は救命具に包まれた状態でベビーカーに座り、泣くことも無く寝ていました。

The weather was nice and the climate was pleasant on the day of the trip. Since the hotel was nearby, we decided to depart from Chatan. Although it was said that it might be cold on the boat, the temperature kept rising and it was warm.

When we saw the whale's blow and its dorsal fin come out of the water, there was a cheer. Just when I thought it was over, we were able to see the whale for quite a long time as it swam. The sea was clear and beautiful, which made it incredibly moving to see the swimming up close.

The staff were kind and predicted where the whales would appear, quickly informing us when they spotted one.

I would love to participate again for some relaxation.

当日は天気がよく気持ちいい気候でした。
ホテルが近くだったので、北谷からの出発にしました。
船上は寒い可能性もあると言われていましたが、どんどん気温が上昇し暖かかったです。

くじらのブロウが見え、背びれが海から出たときは歓声があがりました。それで終わりなのかなと思ったら、くじらの泳ぎにあわせかなり長いことクジラを見ることが出来ました。海が透明でキレイなこともあり、泳ぎを間近で見れ最高に感動しました。

スタッフの方が親切でクジラの現れる場所の予測をしてくれたり、見つけたらいち早く教えてくれたりしました。

また癒されに参加したいなと思いました。

It was my first time whale watching. The sea conditions weren't great, and by the time we arrived at the spot, I was feeling a bit seasick. However, when we encountered the whales, I was so excited that I forgot all about the seasickness. I definitely want to participate in whale watching again.

初めてのホエールウォッチングでした。
海の状態が良くなくてポイントに着いた頃には船酔いぎみでしたが、
『くじら』に遭遇した時には、船酔いも忘れる位にテンションが上がりました。
是非、またホエールウォッチングには参加したいです。
