From late January to early March, the drift ice that is born at the Amur River estuary makes its way to Hokkaido, and the drift ice walk is an experience unique to Shiretoko. It's worth staying in Utoro just for this.

In the morning, there was a light flurry of snow, but by the meeting time, it was cloudy. After gathering at the Picchio office and a brief explanation, we changed into dry suits. It's better not to wear too thick layers, as it makes it difficult to put on the suit, but since your toes can get cold, it's advisable to wear thicker socks. There’s a place to store your belongings and a valuables box, so you can basically go hands-free. I brought my waterproof case for my iPhone and GoPro around my neck. After a short move, we arrived at a vast expanse of drift ice. At first, we walked carefully until we got used to it, and then we started breaking the ice and playing in the sea. It can get quite cold during a snowstorm, but on this day, the latter part saw clearer skies out at sea.

朝は少し雪がちらつきましたが集合時間には曇り。一旦ピッキオさん事務所に集まった後、簡単な説明のあとドライスーツに着替えます。
上下ともあまり分厚いとスーツが着にくいのでモコモコにはしない方がいいけど、つま先は冷えてくるので靴下だけは厚めで。
荷物も置けるし貴重品BOXもあるのであとは基本的には手ぶらでgo。私は首から防水ケースのiPhoneとGoProをつっていきました。貸してくれた防水グローブがタッチ可能だったのでiPhone操作も問題なしでした。いずれにせよ写真は後でいっぱいもらえます。

少し移動したら見渡す限りの流氷原。慣れるまでは慎重に歩いてその後は氷割ったり海に使ったり。吹雪くとさすがに寒いらしいですが、この日は後半沖の方は晴れてきました。

The weather was perfect (except for lunch). The drift ice was in perfect condition, and the Shiretoko mountain range was clearly visible, which was very nice. However, about lunch... I had some hokke (a type of fish), but it was as cold as if it had just come straight out of the refrigerator. I didn't find it tasty at all. I can't recommend this place for individuals... I understand that it's challenging to accommodate a large number of people, but it was a bit disappointing... Everything else was perfect, so it's a shame.

It was a very fulfilling tour that allowed us to cover so many activities in just one day. Above all, the guide's thoughtfulness was wonderful, as they apologized multiple times for the cancellation of the Aurora. Although the cancellation was disappointing, the sight of the drifting ice that I saw for the first time was amazing! Perhaps due to the Spring Festival, there were surprisingly many foreigners.

We were picked up on time in front of the ANA Hotel lobby. There were 46 people on the tour, but on the day I participated, half of them were from overseas. The guide explained everything in both English and Japanese, which I found very impressive. The explanations were thorough and kind. The Shikotsuko Ice Festival was also magical and fun. The weather was nice, and the light displays were beautiful. The roasted marshmallows cooked over the bonfire at the venue were delicious. It was cold, but if you dress warmly, you'll be fine! I'm glad I brought crampons. An hour and a half of sightseeing at the venue felt just right. The bus arrived smoothly, which was great. Maybe it was because it was a weekday. The guide mentioned that on weekends, you have to line up to park. I'm glad I participated.

It was a shame that the tour didn’t allow us to watch the sunset at Cape Notoro; instead, we were stuck on the bus during the golden hour, going back to Abashiri Station.

Besides, when it came to lunch selection, there were only two choices, and I clearly pointed out the fish set menu to the guide, as the other choice contained raw fish that I don’t eat. I don’t know how the guide could even get it wrong. Luckily, there was a very nice girl who was willing to switch with me. But it was still annoying, as the guide's reaction made me feel like I was the dumb one who couldn’t even remember what I’d ordered.

You walk around the park wearing something like snowshoes. You climb up slopes and slide down them, and you can even fall backward in the snow. It was a plan that you can enjoy precisely because it's in the snow.

It seems unlikely that we will see the long-tailed tit. Everyone I asked in Sapporo said, "Basically, you can't see them." I was able to confirm a few birds in the park with the naked eye, but capturing them on camera is also quite difficult.

I caught over 10 fish, but my friends and other groups only caught 2 or 3, which was a bit disappointing. The lecture is thorough, so even beginners in fishing will have no problem. The tempura they fry on-site is delicious, but it's only available once towards the end, so any fish caught afterward will need to be released. It might be because the fishing location changed, but we ended up finishing about 40 to 50 minutes later than scheduled, which caused some of our plans to be canceled. I think it's better to make reservations with some extra time in mind.

釣り場所が変更になったためか、予定時間を40〜50分ほどオーバーしての終了だったので、その後の予定が少しキャンセルになりました。
予定に余裕を持って予約された方がいいかと思います。

When I woke up in the morning, I was worried about the event because the drift ice had drifted quite far offshore, but it went ahead as planned. Since the event was held in the bay, there was plenty of drift ice, and with temperatures just under 10 degrees, there were many cracks, making it easy to get immersed in the ice, which was great. The guide also took a lot of photos for us, which was nice.

If I had to mention something, I would have appreciated having a waterproof case for my smartphone available for rent (it would have been nice to have been informed in advance that a waterproof case would be beneficial), and it was a bit unfortunate that the breakwater showed up in the background of the photos in the bay.

However, I was very satisfied because I received many photos for free! Thank you very much!!

朝起きると流氷がだいぶ沖に流れていたので開催を心配しましたが予定通りでした。
この日は湾内での開催だったので流氷もしっかりあり、気温が10度弱で亀裂も多く流氷にドボンと浸かりやすくてよかったです。
ガイドさんがたくさん写真撮ってくれたのもよかったです。

強いて言えば、レンタル品でスマホ防水ケースがあれば嬉しかった(事前に防水ケースがあったほうがいいよとお声がけいただけたら嬉しかった)のと、湾内だとどうしても写真後ろに防波堤が映り込むのが惜しかったです。

でも、無料でたくさん写真もらえたので大満足です！
