I took a group of undergraduate students here as part of a study-abroad program for U.S. students, and they had a wonderful time and talked about it for days. I think opportunities to do things by hand are always great, and this was one of three separate crafting/making activities I did during this most recent trip to Japan. If you have any interest in confectionary, the culture around tea ceremony, or food more broadly, this is a really fun, engaging way to spend part of a day. The shop is lovely, too.

I made three nerikiri sweets. I enjoyed one on the spot with matcha, and took the other two home. The explanations were very easy to understand, and even someone as clumsy as I am was able to finish them. Although nerikiri is a type of wagashi, it's not something you often get to enjoy unless you're involved with tea ceremonies, so this was my first experience. It was a very enjoyable time.

We had a great time making sweets at the lovely sweet shop in Arashiyama. Although we didn't speak much Japanese and our teacher didn't speak much English, with the help of picture cards and demonstrations, he showed us how to make the sweets and he did help us to do some of the trickier more detailed crafting. It was great fun, and it made a nice break away from the crowds in the centre of town. We got to eat one of the sweets we made, with some matcha tea and the others we took home with us. We would highly recommend this activity for all ages.

I did this activity with my 7 year old daughter. We had a great time and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. My daughter loved it. The instructor did not speak much English, but we were able to figure things out. Making the sweets was fairly straightforward, but the instructor helped out when necessary.

The sweets are delicious. A very unique and fun experience that I highly recommend.

I visit Kyoto 2 to 3 times a year, and this time, besides the cherry blossoms in full bloom, I wanted to enjoy a different experience, so I decided to participate.

Thanks to the craftsman's careful explanation, I was able to create something cute even as a first-timer. Also, even though I participated alone, I was able to enjoy myself in a friendly atmosphere with the people sitting at the same table, so I was very satisfied (*´∀｀).

Kyoto, which is less than an hour from my hometown. I was getting bored of sightseeing and thinking about something fun to do while enjoying the cherry blossoms, so I searched for the Beltora site that I always used overseas... and found it. Making wagashi (Japanese sweets). I've eaten them before, but I've never made them! I participated with my 86-year-old mother. Even though my mother has become a bit clumsy, she was able to enjoy making them, and it seems she experienced a different side of Kyoto. I want to try another fun experience again.

My child had the experience. Unfortunately, it seems we were seated towards the back, so we couldn't hear the teacher's voice, making it difficult to understand how to shape things and what the finished product looked like. However, it seems they still enjoyed it, but it would have been nice if that aspect had been taken into consideration.

Even though they said they didn't understand, the finished items were beautiful and very delicious.

This is a long-established wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop, and I appreciated that it wasn't just an experience for the sake of experiencing something. The ingredients are already prepared, and it starts with shaping them. It might be easy for elementary school students, but I expected it to be quite challenging for adults who have been away from clay modeling. However, they teach you carefully and in order, so I was quite satisfied with what I was able to create. You can eat one on the spot with matcha, and the rest can be packed in a box to take home as a souvenir. I was also satisfied with the taste.

I participated during the busy year-end season. I thought I might have to cancel if I got too busy, but I was able to attend and had a great experience. I learned how beautiful wagashi (Japanese sweets) are made and tried making them myself, which sparked even more interest in wagashi culture. I participated in a trip to celebrate my sixth-grade niece's graduation. Actually, I joined the same event two years ago around this time, and the snacks were exactly the same. I would have preferred to have different snacks if possible.

The venue was on the second floor and only accessible by stairs, so I was able to let my mother, who is in her 70s and has difficulty walking, enter the venue first. Despite having nearly 40 participants, there was only one craftsman at the beginning, which led to multiple interruptions in explanations due to accommodating latecomers. I think it's unfair for those who arrived on time to be made to wait. It would have been better if there had been an additional staff member assisting from the start, but that only happened later on.

The explanation for making traditional Japanese sweets was very easy to understand.

The location is a bit hard to find, and it seems like you need to look at a map to get there. The exterior has an old-fashioned feel, reminiscent of a long-established place. The restroom was in a lovely detached building.

We were guided by a straightforward female staff member to the experience booth on the second floor. The second floor was another beautiful space with a modern Japanese atmosphere. Besides the two of us, there were five students, and later about eight people from China joined us for the experience. The instructor was a male craftsman. This time, we made four items: a butterfly, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and a cheerful design. Using special tools, we progressed together with guidance from the craftsman.

At the end, we were served matcha along with a piece of wagashi. The remaining three items were packed in a special box for us to take home.

It was a wonderful space, and we had a fun experience! I highly recommend it!

外観は老舗、というような古風な感じです。お手洗いは素敵な離れにありました。
サバサバとした話し方の女性店員さんに案内されて二階の体験ブースへ移動します。二階がこれまた素敵な空間で、和モダンな感じです。わたし達2人の他に5人の学生さん、後から8人ほど中国からいらした方が加わっての体験でした。教えてくださったのは男性の職人さんでした。今回は、ちょうちょ、梅とさくら、うららかの4つを作りました。専用の道具で、職人さんに教えて頂きながらみんなで進めていきます。
最後にお抹茶が出てきて、一緒にひとつ和菓子を頂きました。残りの3つは専用の箱に入れて持ち帰ることができました。
とても素敵な空間で楽しい体験ができました〜！おすすめです！
