December in the Yaeyama Islands is a hidden gem season with relatively few tourists, allowing for a relaxed experience away from the crowds! Early December tends to have relatively high temperatures, so it's usually comfortable with just a short-sleeved shirt and a light jacket.
During the summer tourist season, visitors flock to the area, and ferries from Ishigaki Island to Iriomote Island can become fully booked, making it difficult to secure reservations for your desired departure time or resulting in long wait times. In contrast, December offers more flexibility for travel and activities, making it an ideal time for family trips where you can plan your itinerary more calmly!
On Iriomote Island, we had a kayaking experience in one of Japan's largest mangrove forests! The course follows a gentle river, making it suitable for beginners and families with children! In December, there are days when the north wind blows strongly, and during such times, you may need more strength to paddle than you might expect! However, while kayaking, we wore life jackets and were constantly moving, so we hardly felt cold! Depending on the weather and the participants' physical condition, the guide provides support, ensuring a safe experience! If anyone becomes too tired to paddle, the guide will tow them along! By the way, this time, Shogo from Pipi Iriomote Island was our guide, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable kayaking tour!
Additionally, the weather on Iriomote Island can change rapidly, and the weather forecast may not always be reliable! It's advisable to bring rain gear, such as a rain jacket, in case of sudden rain! Even with a bit of rain, enjoying the natural atmosphere is one of the unique charms of Iriomote Island!
After the kayaking experience, we took a lunch break and then traveled by bus to ride a water buffalo cart to Yufu Island! It was a wonderful experience crossing the sea while listening to the sound of the sanshin! This winter tour of Iriomote Island is highly recommended for families who want to avoid crowds and cherish their time in nature!
Please note that the meeting point for this tour is Uehara Port. In December, strong winds may cause ferries to Uehara Port to be canceled, in which case you will need to take a local bus for about an hour to reach Uehara Port after arriving at Ohara Port. You will need to take the ferry departing from Ishigaki Port at 7:30 AM, so if you're not an early riser or are traveling with small children, I recommend staying overnight on Iriomote Island!

西表島では、日本最大級のマングローブ林でカヤック体験を行いました！穏やかな川を進むコースのため、初心者の方やお子様連れの方にもおすすめです！12月は北風が強く吹く日もあり、その際は想像以上にカヤックを漕ぐ力が必要となる場合があります！体験中はライフジャケットを着用し、常に身体を動かしているため、寒さを感じることはほとんどありませんでした！天候や参加される方の体力に応じて、ガイドさんがサポートしてくれますので、安心して参加ができます！体力的にきつくなってしまい漕げなくなってしまった場合はガイドさんが牽引してくれるそうです！ちなみに今回はpipi西表島のパワー担当勝吾さんがガイドをしてくれてとても楽しいカヤックツアーになりました！
また、西表島は天候が変わりやすく、天気予報が当てにならない場合もあります！急な雨に備え、レインウェアなどの雨具の持参をおすすめします！多少の雨でも自然の雰囲気を楽しめるのが、西表島ならではの魅力かと思います！
カヤック体験後は、お昼休憩後、バスで移動して水牛車に乗って由布島へ！三線の音色を聞きながら海を渡る素敵な体験ができます！混雑を避け、自然と向き合う時間を大切にしたい家族におすすめの、冬ならではの西表島ツアーでした！
尚、こちらのツアーの集合場所は上原港です。12月は強風の影響で上原港行きフェリーが欠航となる場合があり、その際は大原港到着後、路線バスで約1時間移動して上原港へ向かいます。石垣港7:30発のフェリー利用が必要となるため、早起きが苦手な方や小さなお子様連れの方は、西表島での前泊をおすすめします！

I had originally signed up for snorkeling, but due to weather reasons, it was changed to canoeing the day before. I participated with a sense of resignation, but in the end, I had a wonderful first-time experience. On the day of the activity, we had calm, sunny weather and high tide, which were great conditions. There were only four of us, so we had two canoes and were able to leisurely enjoy the mangrove forest. Riding the water buffalo cart on Yubu Island was great, and the island had many interesting sights to see. Our guide also pointed out things like the Ryukyu wild boar and the crested serpent eagle along the way, and shared stories about life on the island, making the travel time very meaningful.
シュノーケル希望で申し込んでいた所、天候理由で前日にカヌーに変更になりました。仕方ないか〜の気持ちで参加したのですが、結果、初めての体験が出来てとても楽しめました。当日は無風の晴天、さらに満潮という好条件で、人数も4人で2艇、ゆっくりとマングローブの森を満喫できました。由布島も水牛車に乗ることももちろん、島内も見どころがあって良かったです。ガイドさんも道中に琉球いのししやカンムリワシなどを見つけて教えてくれたり、島での生活のことを話してくれたりして、移動時間も有意義に過ごせました。

In December, the weather was cloudy, and I thought it would be cold to participate, but I was able to experience kayaking without any particular issues.
My lower body got wet and the water was cold, but given the local climate, it wasn't freezing.
We progressed along a route surrounded by mangroves and made a stop along the way. We received explanations about the island's plants and creatures.

Since Pipi often conducts tours with relatively large groups, I was a bit apprehensive about potential waiting times, and I heard mixed reviews about it. However, to share the outcome, it turned out to be an amazing tour!
Indeed, there were some waiting times (like during equipment collection and waiting for showers), but I considered those small breaks during the tour, which I actually appreciated! Our guide, Shogo, named our group "Shogo Team," which allowed us to enjoy the experience together with the other participants.
The kayaking experience was a bit challenging due to the weather and strong winds, but we were taken to a field where we could fully appreciate Iriomote Island. Since we were going to get wet anyway, the rain didn't bother me at all, and I had a great time!
Iriomote is quite large, so during our car rides, Shogo shared interesting facts about the island, mixing in humor, which made for a very enjoyable time! He also recommended some great places to eat!
The place where we had lunch seemed to have a proprietor who wasn't fond of media or reviews, so I won’t mention the name, but it was truly a delicious local diner. If you go, I highly recommend asking Shogo for directions!
The timing for visiting Yubu Island was just right, allowing us to explore without rushing or feeling like we had too much time on our hands. The cakes, coffee, and ice cream at Yubu Island Tea House were exceptional, so I definitely recommend trying them!
It seems that the timing for riding the water buffalo cart can vary greatly depending on the buffalo, but the one we had was just right—not too fast and not too slow! Listening to the sanshin was a nice touch that felt very Okinawan!
This tour might not be suitable for those who prefer smaller groups, but I was very satisfied! Thank you!
比較的多い人数でツアー催行をするpipiさんなので待ち時間が発生したりと、評判も良い悪い半々くらいなのでどうかなあ〜と思いながらの参加でしたが....結果からお伝えするとすっごくいいツアーでした！
たしかに待ち時間が発生(道具の回収中やシャワーの順番待ち等)しましたが、ツアー中の小休憩と思えばむしろ私にはありがたい時間でした！
ガイドさんのショウゴさんが｢ショウゴチーム｣と名付けてくれたので参加者の方々と一緒に楽しめることが出来ました！
カヤック体験は天候が悪め、風が強めでしたが西表をめいいっぱい感じれるフィールドに連れて行って貰えて、どうせ濡れるので雨は全く気にならず楽しめました！
西表は大きいので車での移動中も西表の豆知識を笑いと織り交ぜながら話してくれるのでとっても楽しい時間でした！
お勧めのご飯屋さんも教えてくれます！
お昼ご飯を食べたところは店主さんがメディアや口コミが好きじゃないみたいなのであえて店名は伏せますが本当に美味しい島の定食屋さんだったので是非行かれる方はショウゴさんに聞いて伺って見てほしいです！
由布島も丁度いい時間設定なので、急いで回ることもなく、時間を持て余すのこともなく由布島を観光できました！
由布島茶屋さんのケーキ、由布島コーヒー、アイスは絶品なので是非食べて欲しいです！
水牛さんによって水牛車の乗車時間が大きくズレる見たいですが今回の水牛さんは早すぎず遅すぎずナイスな水牛さんでした！三線を聞けるのも沖縄らしくて良きでした！
少人数を好む人には向いてないかもしれませんが私は満足でした！

The activities on Iriomote Island were an experience where I could fully feel the energy of nature. Canoeing on the Urauchi River was more challenging than I had imagined, as I struggled against the wind and waves while paddling hard. However, thanks to our guide, Shogo, who provided precise advice, and the shallow waters of the river, I was able to enjoy it with peace of mind.
After two hours of canoeing, we were introduced to a local dining spot near Uehara Port, which was also great. In the afternoon, the sightseeing at Yubu Island was soothing, with beautiful views from the water buffalo and cart, allowing us to fully enjoy the nature of Iriomote Island.
Even during the car rides, the interesting stories about the unique plants, animals, and customs of Iriomote Island made the experience memorable, and I found myself recalling them in various moments throughout our stay. I heard a story about hunting boars using natural traps, and that evening, I enjoyed delicious boar sashimi at an izakaya that you can't find in Tokyo!
My husband and I are already discussing what we should do next time we come. I would like to challenge myself with a longer trekking experience next time. If that happens, I hope to rely on you again, Pipi!
西表島でのアクティビティは大自然のエネルギーを身体いっぱい感じる体験でした。
浦内川でのカヌーは想像していたより、風や波と格闘しながら必死に漕ぎましたが、ガイドの勝吾さんの的確なアドバイスや、川も浅いので安心して楽しめました。
2時間カヌー、その後上原港近くではローカルな食事処を紹介いただきそれもよかったです。午後の由布島観光は水牛や牛車からの景色に癒され西表島の自然を満喫しました。
移動の車中も貴重な西表島の動植物や慣習などのお話が面白く、滞在中色んな場面で思い出していました。自然の罠だけで猪狩りをする話を聞き、その晩は居酒屋さんで東京では食べられない猪のタタキを美味しくいただきました！！
次来たら何しようと主人と既に話しています。次回は時間長めのトレッキングなどもチャレンジしたいです。その際はまたpipiさん、よろしくお願いします！！

I have been interested in mangroves for a while, so I decided to participate in this tour. It was just as I expected, and I was able to see the beautiful nature and mangroves. We could explore at a leisurely pace, and I was also able to see a white heron walking, which was very soothing. On the day of the tour, the wind was strong, and we were only able to go by canoe. The tour guide provided thorough explanations, and although there were times when it was a bit challenging due to the strong wind, they supported us when things didn't go smoothly. Today, the ferry from Ishigaki Island to Iriomote Island was canceled due to rough seas caused by high waves, and there were no departures to Uehara Port. The day before, I received a call from the operating company, pipi, informing me of this.
As a result, I purchased a ticket for the 7:30 ferry to Uehara Port and took a substitute bus provided by the ferry company via Ohara Port. This part was a bit complicated. お昼は、1.5hr程度で。シーズンオフですが、お店は五件程度ありました。島ガーデン嶺へ。イカスミヤキソバ、イカスミチャーハンを選んで◎。黒くなった歯は、キマッテル。
上原港から由布島に行く間も、直くんの話で、この道で1度だけイリオモテヤマネコを見たと言う話を聞いて、路肩をくまなく見てました。まぁ、いない！！
最後に由布島は、雄大な西表島の自然をバックに由布島に向けて歩く水牛車は、必見でした。最初は退屈かなと思いましたが、海を渡る水牛はなかなか風情がありステキでした。カヌーより由布島の方が私は好きでした。由布島は、1時間程度散策でちょうどよいです。
帰りは1630の石垣島行きフェリーに乗れました。
35歳ですが少し疲労度もありながら、大満足でした。最初は、カヌー&シュノーケリングツアーも考えましたが、こっちでよかったかな。

Two women participated in the activity. In the morning, we went kayaking as part of a group with three other pairs, but all the other participants were men. Since it was a windy day, we were struggling to keep up and honestly didn't have the leisure to enjoy the scenery. We worked hard because we didn't want to inconvenience the other participants.
I think it's a bit tough for women who aren't confident in their strength on windy days. However, if you're participating as a couple, I don't think it would be a problem.
I thought the staff's response was very good! Also, in the afternoon, we had sightseeing planned, so the schedule was just right and not too tiring!

Recently, I participated in this tour on Ishigaki Island. To sum it up, it was far more enjoyable than I expected!
First, we experienced paddling through the mangroves by canoe. The depths of the forest were incredibly quiet, and the air was refreshingly cool, making it a perfect way to rejuvenate. Even as a beginner, the guide patiently taught us how to paddle, so I quickly got the hang of it and felt like I was alone in nature.
After that, we traveled to Yubu Island by the famous water buffalo cart. The gentle sound of the sanshin made the leisurely crossing of the sea feel truly luxurious. Before I knew it, we arrived at the island while listening to the names of the water buffalo and the funny stories from the old man. On Yubu Island, I enjoyed the laid-back island time surrounded by tropical flowers and butterflies.
The only concern I had was that the shower facilities after the tour were a bit old, and I noticed some cleanliness issues. However, considering it was an activity facility in nature, it might be within acceptable limits. Overall, it was a wonderful tour where I could enjoy both activities and relaxation. If you're unsure about what to do while sightseeing in Ishigaki Island, I definitely recommend choosing this!

I made a reservation the day before, and they kindly accepted me, allowing me to join the tour. The travel time was interesting as I heard many things about Iriomote Island that I had never known before!
During canyoning, I couldn't bring anything except my GoPro camera, but thanks to the many photos and videos they took, I have wonderful memories!
After the tour, they also recommended a nearby lunch spot after dropping us off, so we were able to spend the waiting time for the boat without any issues!

My first time on Iriomote Island and my first time with a water buffalo 🐃
The sea was very beautiful, and I was able to see sea turtles up close, which was amazing! The garlic shrimp I had at a place called "Shonen" in front of the ferry terminal on Iriomote Island was the best!

I participated in the Mangrove Canoe & Yubu Island sightseeing tour. Canoeing in the beautiful weather was truly refreshing, and just moving through nature was healing. Our female guide, Gin-chan, was fantastic, providing detailed information about the mangroves, terrain, and plants, allowing us to enjoy the scenery while listening to her explanations. After a lunch break, we rode a water buffalo cart to Yubu Island. We spent a relaxing time listening to the performance of the sanshin and singing, and the natural gelato on Yubu Island was exquisite! I had heard that the island had nothing to offer, but it was filled with natural attractions, and it was a fulfilling tour that left me wanting more time.

I participated in a plan that included a mangrove canoe experience and a tour of Yufu Island. On the day of the tour, I was worried about the weather and whether it would be held, but thanks to the guides, I was able to participate in the full-day tour without any issues.
It was my first time canoeing, but I felt reassured as they carefully explained how to paddle at the beginning. Paddling through the Nakama River surrounded by mangroves allowed me to truly feel the beauty of nature, and I was very satisfied. It was great that we could get off the canoe to observe the mangroves up close and take photos as well.
During the Yufu Island tour, I was able to leisurely cross the sea in a water buffalo cart while listening to the performance of the sanshin and singing. I also enjoyed taking commemorative photos with the water buffalo.

Previously, I participated in a kayak tour with the same company and had a wonderful time, so I was looking forward to joining the SUP tour this time. This time, we explored the mangroves of Iriomote Island on a SUP.
My friend who joined me couldn't speak Japanese, but the SUP guide was very attentive, so the language barrier was not an issue at all. Additionally, during the water buffalo experience, a guide named Matsuko prepared English materials, which made it easy for English speakers to understand the explanations, and I was really happy about that.
The mangroves we visited this time were in a different location than last time, and both the scenery and the experience exceeded my expectations. All the necessary equipment was prepared in advance, allowing the tour to proceed smoothly. We were also able to use a shower during the tour, and we had plenty of time for breaks and lunch.
Furthermore, we were given recommendations for nearby restaurants to stop by during our break, which saved us the trouble of searching for them ourselves. Yubu Island is a small, beautiful island, and we were able to enjoy it thoroughly even within the limited time. The experience with the water buffalo cart and the performance of the sanshin left a particularly strong impression on me.
Next time I visit Iriomote Island, I definitely want to use this tour company again.

今回訪れたマングローブは前回とは違う場所で、景色も体験も期待以上に素晴らしかったです。必要な道具はすべて事前に準備されていて、スムーズにツアーが進行しました。ツアーの途中でシャワーを使うこともでき、休憩やランチの時間も十分に取ってもらえました。
さらに、休憩中に立ち寄れるおすすめの飲食店を教えてもらえたので、自分たちで探す手間が省けて助かりました。由布島は小さな美しい島で、限られた時間の中でも十分に楽しむことができました。水牛車の体験と三線の演奏は特に印象に残っています。
次回西表島に訪れる際も、ぜひこのツアー会社を利用したいと思います。

The weather was wonderful, and it felt really nice. I highly recommend this place for those who want to experience something extraordinary in a jungle that feels like dinosaurs might appear! As an adult, I’ve found that I don’t get to let loose as much anymore, but I had a great time climbing and jumping around. I was quite nervous about the jumps, but the instructor, Koma-chan, really encouraged and cheered me on, so I managed to do it! I couldn’t bring my own camera for safety reasons, but the instructor took photos for us, which was great for capturing memories.

I did this with my 7-year-old child. I was worried about doing it with my child, but once we tried it, it was so much fun.
Before we set off, the guide provided sufficient explanations, making it easy to operate the canoe. While listening to the detailed explanations, we were able to experience the mysterious ecosystem of the mangrove forest and various creatures, which was educational for my child as well. Canoeing through the mangrove forest was a special time for both my child and me.
The water buffalo cart entering Yubu Island felt peaceful, as if we were stepping into a painting. During the ride to the island, the guide explained the names and characteristics of the water buffalo, and we were able to greet them affectionately with my child.
