JR Flex Rail Ticket: Tokyo to Kyoto Round-Trip Bullet Train Ticket & Coupon
Overall Rating
5.00JR Flex Ticket Shinkansen Ticket
Reviewed by: Joel P, 2020/02/20We used Veltra to purchase tickets on the Bullet Train from Tokyo to Kyoto. The online purchase was easy enough. However, finding the JR Tokai office in Tokyo Station was difficult. I had to ask several people for help finding the area it was in. Once we found the office, there is about a 15 minutes process for them to prepare your ticket package. This package will include a set of tickets for each direction on ANY Shinkansen train, even the fast Nozumi, and your experience coupon for use in Kyoto. They also include various receipts and schedules. It seemed like quite a package. The woman who assisted us was very nice and able to answer my questions and explain the process very well. The tickets are for unreserved seats on the train. They will explain which cars are unreserved. Getting to the train and finding seats was very easy, there are about 6 trains per hour to choose from. There ride was smooth and interesting, we could even see Mt Fuji on the journey. It was amazing to make the trip in about 2 hours, when Google Maps said by car was over 6 hours! Just to remember, you will need your ticket to exit the station at the end of your journey, so make sure you hold onto it. Overall, I would use this service again. It was easy, fun, and much cheaper than buying regular Shinkansen tickets.

JR shinkansen flex ticket round trip from Tokyo to Kyoto with included experience coupon.
Reviewed by: Jeff, 2020/01/12We used the Shinkansen round trip flex ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto and back to Tokyo. This ticket is a non reserved seat, which means you do not have a specific seat number reserved for you and can typically only sit in the first 3 cars of the train. We got a seat both times but there is a chance you will have to stand if it is a particularly busy train. We had to stand on the bullet train from Nagano to Tokyo and paid $80 for a one way non-reserved ticket (this was a purchase we made separate if this package).
So, I think that if you are taking a bullet train more than twice you will save more by buying the JR pass for foreigners (which is roughly $260 per person and provides unlimited train and JR operated subway riding for a two week period).
For the experience coupon we chose a buffet lunch at Kyoto tower which was delicious as you got to taste different foods. The experience also included a ticket to the observation deck at the top of the tower which provided an awesome view of the entire city.
Most of the "experiences" offered are food related from the handout the site provided. Make sure when you go to your experience of choosing that you take the "experience coupon" with you which are placed inside the same envelope as your train tickets.
Overall this deal saved us money because they are compensating us some for this review and we only needed to use the bullet train one time after our time in Nagano. If you find yourself in a similar situation I highly recommend this train ticket and experience package it was simple, easy and lots of fun.
