For a tour in Japan, I would prefer a guide who is either Japanese or has knowledge at a similar level. Even just sharing small anecdotes that a Japanese person would naturally know (like about the Fuji Five Lakes or the differences between the Shizuoka and Yamanashi sides, or about the Aokigahara Forest) would have made a significant difference in the overall impression.
