Japanese Plastic Food Sample Art Experience in Tokyo

An amazing experience!

Reviewed by: Shaz

We had a young chap who spoke quite good English for a Japanese, to run through what we were supposed to do.

The whole process was very fun and it was amazing to see the other fake food items that the store makes too!

The only downside is finding this place, it is in a small and quiet neighbourhood in Tokyo. However it was also fun exploring the area once you're there.

Highly recommended, not only for families with young kids but adults as well!

I made a full sized parfait. The staff was very patient and helpful. His english is understandable, and he made a great effort explaining himself. It was fun and easy enough for adults or kids. Took only 30minutes or so. Would like to try making tempura and curry rice next time. Look really realistic!!

First of all, I appreciated the polite guidance I received via email the day before; it was very helpful. Not only did it specify which bus to take from the station, but it also explained what to do after getting off at the bus stop. I had already checked it on Google Maps beforehand, but the instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

At the beginning, I chose a postcard with a sketch on it and painted over it. Besides the Wind God and Thunder God, there were also animals and flowers available, but my friend and I decided to go with the Wind God and Thunder God. There are coloring models available, but you can choose your own colors, and you also receive advice, so even though I wasn't very confident in my skills, I think I managed to create something decent.

Before starting, I thought it would be quick since the size was postcard-sized, but waiting for the paint to dry and thinking about what colors to use turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. During the session, they also served us tea. Before I knew it, two hours had passed. At the end, they framed the painting for us, and that was the conclusion of the experience.

While I primarily visit Kyoto for sightseeing, as I get older, a full day of sightseeing has become tiring, so it seems that incorporating experiences like this one, followed by visiting two or three places, will become my new pattern. It was a good stimulation for my aging brain as well.

During the experience, we were able to have various conversations, and I also had a great time, so thank you for that.

I understand that after the experience, you went to Shinnyodo and Hōnen-in nearby. I hope my simple directions helped you reach there safely. I regret not having prepared a simple map of the area.

I went on a monitor tour of the Nihonga Experience Studio Emaki.

I got off at the bus stop near Jodo-ji and clicked on "Japanese Painting Experience - Emaki" that I had saved in my smartphone schedule to check the map on Google Maps. To my surprise, it showed up inside Higashiyama Jisho-ji... After walking for a while, I felt something was off, so I checked the official website for the meeting place map and corrected my direction. However, the location indicated on the map was a liquor store... Just when I was starting to feel lost, I noticed a space that seemed to fit the description in a corner of the liquor store. It would be helpful if there was a banner or something to make it clearer. If you go directly, it's only a 2-3 minute walk from the bus stop.

Once seated, we greeted each other. In front of me was a paint box containing 30-40 colors of solid paint for Japanese painting, along with two brushes, water, a towel (for moisture control), a palette, and a file with postcards that had outlines drawn on them. I chose what I wanted to paint from that file. There were completed pieces available for reference, so I could choose based on those. I selected "Raijin" from the Wind God and Thunder God series, which required detailed coloring, while my partner chose "Iris." In the end, the larger designs were more challenging because they required techniques for shading and blending, but I felt I could experience some of the techniques of Japanese painting. Finally, we sprinkled gold leaf, added a Japanese painting-like touch, let it dry, and framed it to complete the piece. I thought I had done it smoothly, but it ended up taking about an hour and twenty minutes.

If you actively ask questions, they will teach you various techniques of Japanese painting, so I think it's good to proceed while asking. They also served us tea.

Thank you for visiting us the other day.

It seems you had quite a difficult time finding us due to Google Maps mistakenly confusing Jodo-ji and Jodo-in. I sincerely apologize for the confusion, especially since we do not have any banners or large signs at our store.

Our shop is located in a corner of a sake store, and while we have paintings displayed in the showcase and a noren featuring the Wind God and Thunder God at the entrance, it appears that it was hard to identify unless you were right in front of it.

We would like to utilize your valuable experience for our future improvements. We are currently in the process of creating a hanging sign to make our presence more noticeable.

We hope that those who participate in the Japanese painting experience can enjoy even a glimpse of its essence within the small postcard. Thank you for your valuable feedback and comments.

Experience making a Tokoname pottery tumbler with a pottery wheel.

Reviewed by: いねゆ

I finally got to experience pottery on a potter's wheel, something I've wanted to try for a long time. The location is Tokoname, near Chubu Centrair International Airport. I had heard that it was a "pottery town," but this was my first visit. The shop "Sakura Raku Hikari Kyusu" is located in a section of the "Tokoname-yaki Ceramall," which has many Tokoname pottery shops, just a little north of the "Yaki Mono Sanpo Michi," where the movie "20th Century Boys" was filmed.

Since it was a weekday, there were few people, and I was the only one for the experience (though I had seen many reservation calls coming in). This allowed for one-on-one instruction. They provided an apron, so I put it on, and since accessories could get damaged by the clay, I took them off and was all set. By the way, it's better to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. I ended up getting clay on my pants… I also think it's better to have short nails since they can dig into the clay.

First, I was advised to think of anything I wanted to make, and from those ideas, I chose to make a tumbler. When I mentioned the desired size, they added the appropriate amount of clay to the wheel. I started by wrapping my hands around it and raising it high, then pressed down to lower it, repeating this process to knead the clay. Next, I poked a hole in the center to create a depression. While pinching with both hands, I thinned out the walls. Finally, I shaped it by pressing and expanding it into my desired form. I felt reassured knowing they would help fix any mistakes along the way.

With the leftover clay, I made another tumbler. Since I hadn't specified that I wanted two of the same size at the beginning, the second one turned out a bit smaller, making it a couple's tumbler. In my case, since the second one was the same shape, they let me do as I pleased.

Once I finished creating, I selected a color from about six options. Even if I made several, they would all be the same color. I could also have my own stamp engraved on the bottom. It takes about a month for the pieces to be fired, and they asked if I wanted them shipped or if I would pick them up.

After everything was done, I could choose a drink from coffee, tea, or yuzu tea. They also provided some karinto (sweet fried snacks). It was a nice break for my tired body.

Afterward, I went around to various shops and ended up doing a lot of shopping. I held back on buying more tumblers, though (laughs). I think it would have been easier to create if I had looked around first and had a clearer idea of what I wanted to make. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished pieces! I'll post pictures when they're ready.

P.S.
They are finished! I thought it would be for beer, but it turned out quite small, so it’s probably more for tea (laughs). But I'm happy with how beautifully it turned out.

<追伸>

Although we made a reservation the day before, since it was a weekday, we were able to have the place to ourselves! We got a bit lost on the way (^ - ^; It’s hard to accomplish everything in a short time, but they provided advice while observing us, and made adjustments when necessary, so I think even first-timers can experience it with peace of mind! I tend to put in too much effort and got called out on it often (laughs). With quite a bit of help, we were able to finish nicely! In our case, we were able to create two pieces in one session♪ It was a bit disappointing that we could only choose one color, but choosing was fun too! The tea we had after breaking a sweat was also nice (laughs). It takes about a month for the finished products to be ready, so we have the option to pick them up or have them shipped. If I have them sent to me along with my friend's items, I only have to pay for shipping once, so I opted for that♪ They haven't arrived yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing the finished products!

ちょっと場所に迷いました(^-^;

We booked the sundae workshop, and after completing it we realised we should of booked a full day and done all of them!
I booked this (female) for my partner and I to do, he wasnt looking forward to it but ending up having alot of fun.
The guy we had was fantastic, we took lots of photos, he explained everything perfectly.
It was alittle tricky to find, we did follow the directions but went too far - the place is part of a house, and there is a little sliding door where you need to go. So if you end up at a t-intersection after it says it is on the left hand side you have gone too far.

Food sample making experience

The workshop was located in a typical residential area, and the large sign made it easy to find. We participated as a pair and made ramen and parfait clips.

There was another group already working on making tempura at the experience location. Although it was a small workshop, each group was happily working with the instructors. During the process, I learned that ramen is made from "wax" and parfait from "vinyl resin."

The instructor carefully explained the characteristics of each material, and I think it's better to create different items when participating in a group, as it allows everyone to learn about various food sample-making processes. When we actually made the items, there were examples of failed attempts and various sizes and colors of topping samples prepared in advance, which made it very efficient and allowed us to create cute clips without any mistakes.

When we were leaving, our creations were carefully packed into boxes, so even though I live overseas, they didn't get damaged during the long flight. Additionally, I received a document that briefly explained the history of food samples and the challenges of expanding globally. In a short time, I was able to learn not only about the materials' characteristics but also about the history of sample making and the difficulties of global expansion, thanks to the instructors' thorough preparation and efforts to ensure participants had an enjoyable experience. I believe this activity can be enjoyed by both children and adults.

Also, since I booked through Veltra and paid in advance, the experience went smoothly without the common reservation or payment issues often encountered abroad. Thank you for a wonderful time.

This is a very fun workshop, and I do really enjoy doing the food samples. Not to worry if you do not understand Japanese, as one of the staff is able to communicate in basic English. And Mr. Ito even used the language translator apps on his phone to communicate with me and explain to me the various materials used in the food samples. You should try it if you are visiting Tokyo!

I feel like a craftsman.

Today, I'm making ramen.
Believe it or not, I'm a repeat visitor!
After enjoying the tart-making experience last time, I brought along an acquaintance from America.
Unlike tarts, ramen involves working with wax, shaping the noodles and menma in hot water.
For the noodles, I dip 3-4 strands in hot water and twist them into a figure-eight shape.
I start by making menma from rectangular pieces.
Recalling the shape of menma, I knead, twist, and pull.
I already feel like a skilled craftsman. ( *´
For the broth, I pour colored wax into the bowl.
This part is a bit hot, so I asked the workshop staff for help.
I cut green onions into stick shapes with scissors and beautifully arrange the spinach, naruto, and green onions.
I ended up with a very satisfying bowl of ramen.

Thank you to everyone at the workshop for the detailed explanations about the properties of wax and for all the thoughtful assistance.
I will definitely come back with someone else.

Japanese Plastic Food Sample Art Experience in Tokyo

A Must-Do Activity!

Reviewed by: Marlent

A group of 5 of us did this unforgettable experience! Everything was perfect and the staff was extremely friendly! We were given great instruction and valuable information about sample food production and history. We were given a lot of control and freedom with our creations and never did we feel like we were being rushed. It was a truly enjoyable experience.

Our instructor was Kazuya Ito. He was great! And he has great English, especially since he told us he is self-taught from watching movies! Truly amazing!

Hello Sir

Thank you very much for coming to the store the other day.
If you'd enjoy a food sample making experience, I'm glad.
Unfortunately it's crowded and is a separate room, and I apologize for that on the day.
It wasn't too fluent, but if you'd understand, English was good.
By all means, we look forward to seeing you again.
Thank you. Staff kazuya Ito

Fantastic! A great experience!

Reviewed by: Caroline

Our family all really enjoyed making the wax food models, it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our host had enough English to explain what to do, but we weren't expecting this, so that was an added bonus. We were all really pleased with our creations!

The travel directions were accurate and easy to follow and we found it to be very accessible. In addition, it was also very good value.

Japanese Plastic Food Sample Art Experience in Tokyo

definitely recommended!!!

Reviewed by: hazel

Definitely recommended for families travelling to tokyo with young children. It was held in a cosy home environment, easy to find with instructions upon booking and kids got mostly hands on experience to make the plastic food samples. We picked the sundae and ramen but if I were to do it again will pick curry rice and tempura too..value for money for the experience. They made sure to pack the items probably before u left...nothing but praise for them!

Awesome experience in plastic food sample

Reviewed by: Lau Yee How

This is a very good introductory lesson into plastic food making and the history and techniques which were used to make the plastic food.
Mr Ito is a very good teacher, who will spend his time to explain his art in fullest details and does his best to communicate in english to the non-Japanese speaking guests to make them feel comfortable and be immersed in the lesson.

Surprisingly cool

The staff in the workshop supported us with kindness, and even our 2nd daughter who is in the 3rd grade in elementary school succeeded in making the parfait. It was surprisingly easy to create it.
We brought it home, and my wife and eldest daughter were so surprised to see its perfection."""

Japanese Plastic Food Sample Art Experience in Tokyo

We had a great time!

Reviewed by: Youngjoon Park

It was held in a small workshop located in a residential area. In the workshop, 3 other families were creating ramen (Chinese noodle) and tempura. Our children were really excited. We made a reservation for the parfait-making plac. The instructor taught us very politely and we did not have to worry (As our child is an elementary school student, we worried she might have some difficulties making the parfait).

It was fun to see that the parfait slowly taking shape. Our child was also happy to see it. We had a great time as a family thanks to this experience. We would like to do this again. Next time we will try making the ramen and tempura.
