I had long hoped to take a tour on a water buffalo cart. Not only was the scenery beautiful, but the driver and everyone else played the sanshin, making it a wonderful experience.

I was worried about whether we would be able to return without being left behind during the 10-hour round trip trek, but we ended up climbing with a pair of four girls and two others who had similar stamina to ours. There were several breaks along the way, and it turned out to be a fulfilling day where I could enjoy and learn a lot about the history of the cedar trees with my own eyes.
There were several difficult spots, but having many companions to climb with made me feel reassured, and I experienced a great sense of accomplishment. Without the tour, I would have likely gotten tired and given up, and I definitely wouldn't have made it to the destination, so it was a wonderful opportunity. The way back felt like it went by in no time!
往復で10時間のトレッキングということでちゃんと置いてかれずに帰って来れるのか不安でしたが、私たちは女の子4人のペアと私たち2人で体力が同じくらいの方と一緒に登ることになりました。休憩も所々何ヶ所かあり、杉の歴史をたのしく自分の目でみていっぱい知れる充実した1日となりました。
難所は何ヶ所がありましたが、一緒に登る仲間がたくさんいて心強いと感じましたし、達成感がとてもありました。ツアーなしでは疲れて諦めてしまい確実にたどり着くことできなかったため、とてもいい機会でした。帰り道はあっという間でした！

Due to the schedule of my trip, I was looking for a tour in the afternoon, and I was very grateful that they were able to accommodate me with a rental included! The tour guide was very friendly and provided an enjoyable experience. I was able to fully appreciate the nature of Yakushima, and it became a truly wonderful memory to finally see the moss-covered forest that I had longed to visit. On the way back, they also took me to a recommended souvenir shop, which was very helpful!
This time, I had to give up on Taiko Rock, so I would love to go again in spring to see the cherry blossoms, as recommended by the guide! It was a lot of fun, thank you so much!

I thought it might be cold with a temperature of around 25°C, but when the sun was out, it felt warm, and while paddling on the SUP, it was actually quite hot! I was able to swim just fine while wearing a wetsuit for snorkeling! The guide was always attentive to our well-being, which made it easy to enjoy ourselves. 🤙 The sea and river weren't crowded at all, so we could move around freely and leisurely. I think coming here in winter could be a great option!
気温は25℃くらいで寒いかなと思いましたが、太陽が出ていると暖かく、SUPは漕いでいるとむしろ暑いくらいでした！シュノーケリングもウェットスーツを着用したら全然泳げました！

We were given short breaks every 50 minutes. Whenever I felt it was tough, the guide provided us with a break, which helped me reach the summit of Jomon Sugi without any issues. It seems that the guide has great photography skills. I really liked the photos that were shared. The companions, who were also foreigners, were very kind and supportive, for which I am truly grateful. I have warm memories from this experience, and it made me want to visit Yakushima again. If I come back, I think I will sign up for another day tour.
50분마다 휴식시간이 잠깐씩 주어졌습니다. 힘들다 생각될때마다 가이드님이 휴식을 주셔서 조몬스기 정상까지 무난히 도착할 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 가이드님의 사진 실력이 좋으신 듯 합니다. 저는 전달해주신 사진들이 무척 좋았습니다. 동행들도 외국인인 저를 다정히 보듬어주셔서 정말 감사했습니다. 따뜻한 추억을 가지게 되었고 이 경험으로 다음에 또 한번 야쿠시마에 오고 싶어졌습니다. 다음에도 오게되면 또 한번 일일투어를 신청할 것 같습니다.

The instructors were very kind and taught us well, which was great. Even though it wasn't a very good day weather-wise, our guide was able to find sea turtles and clownfish for us.
The photos they took were amazing and captured a wonderful atmosphere that was different from my own perspective.

The young female staff at the reception was very polite and explained everything clearly. Although the wind was strong, I didn't feel seasick, and it was impressive to see about four staff members waving goodbye as we departed from Ishigaki Island. The water buffalo, Yufu Island, the bus driver, and the female staff for the mangrove tour at Nakama River were all very kind and provided thorough explanations. The lunch was delicious, and everything was great!
However, I was really looking forward to the free time on Taketomi Island at the end. I had planned to spend the entire next day on Taketomi Island, so I wanted to take 2-3 hours to scout the area. While I was wandering around trying to find a rental bicycle place within walking distance from the port, an older man shouted, "The rental bicycles are this way!" When I approached to ask, he said, "Just get in the car for now!" even though I clearly told him I hadn't made a reservation.
After getting out of the car and trying to proceed with the rental bicycle process, the female staff at the reception said, "Only renting a bicycle? You can't get in the car unless it's part of the water buffalo package." When I explained that I had told the man I was only renting a bicycle and hadn't made a reservation, she seemed reluctant. I suddenly felt uncomfortable and tried to leave, but I was prompted to write my name down, so I borrowed the bicycle for a bit. However, I was worried about the bus schedule back to the port and ended up returning it after just one hour. Renting a bicycle for a whole day would have allowed for a more relaxed experience, but 2,000 yen for just two hours felt expensive, especially during the off-season.
I had imagined Taketomi Island to be a more leisurely place, but it felt very rushed, which was disappointing, and I decided not to go back the next day. Originally, I had planned to only visit Taketomi Island, so it was a good thing I participated in the tour and was able to visit other islands as well.
受付の若い女性スタッフさんとても丁寧で分かりやすく説明してくれました。風が強かったが船に酔うこともなく、石垣島を出港する時スタッフさんが4人位でずっと手を振ってくれていたのが印象的。水牛も由布島もバスの運転手さん、仲間川のマングローブ遊覧の女性スタッフさん、とても親切丁寧に説明をしてくださり、昼食も美味しくとても良かった！ただ、一番楽しみにしていた最後の竹富島フリータイム。翌日丸一日を竹富島に行こうと計画していたので、2〜3時間かけて下見をしようと思っていたが、港から歩いていけるレンタサイクルさんがどういっていいかウロウロしていたら、おじさんが「レンタサイクルはこっちー！」と叫んでいて、聞いてみようと近くに行ったら「レンタサイクルだけ？とりあえず乗って！」と車に乗せられた。予約 もしていないとハッキリ伝えていた。車を降り、レンタサイクルの手続きをしようとしたところ、受付の女性に「レンタサイクルだけ？水牛とセットじゃないと車には乗れないんですけど？」と言われた。おじさんに予約してないし、レンタサイクルのみと伝えたと言うと、何だか渋々。一気に嫌な気分になり、出ようとしたが、ここに名前書いてーと促され、とりあえず借りたが、港までのバスの時間だとか、あれこれ気になって結局1時間で返し、港に向かった。レンタサイクル1日借りられればゆったり出来るだろうが、2時間で2000円は高い。オフシーズンなのに。竹富島のイメージがもっとゆったりとしたものと思っていたがとてもせわしなく、がっかりしてしまい翌日も行くのをやめた。元々竹富島だけに行こうと考えていたので、ツアーに参加して他の島も行くことが出来てよかったです。

It was a wonderful tour. We gathered at Uehara Port and after about 40 minutes, we arrived at the water buffalo riding area, and then we headed to Yufu Island. There were many water buffaloes. We had just under an hour of free time here, which was enough to explore. After that, we returned to Uehara Port for lunch. Our guide recommended a delicious restaurant. We went into a pork cutlet place and were very satisfied. (Meals are not included.) After that, we went on the main mangrove canoe tour. The guide taught us how to paddle, and we were off to challenge ourselves. Time flew by in no time. Even as a beginner, I was able to paddle easily. Your lower body will get wet before you start paddling, so a change of clothes is necessary. The guide takes photos with the mangroves, so there's no need to bring a smartphone or camera. The guides were all very nice people.

It was raining, but I didn't mind at all because the red brick houses and the water buffalo provided the best healing experience! Since I was a beginner in mountain climbing and had elementary school children with me, I was a bit anxious about how things would go even though I made a reservation. However, perhaps considering our situation, the tour guide was a kind and experienced person, and we were able to safely see the Jomon Sugi and return.
The guide was knowledgeable not only about Yakushima but also about various subjects. During the hike, he shared stories about geology, biology, history, geography, and medicine with my child (who is in the fourth grade), allowing us to enjoy learning together while climbing.
Fortunately, it was a day with no rain at all, and it was even a bit hot, but the footing was good, making for a very fulfilling day. As the guide mentioned at the end, "It's a very precious opportunity to participate together as a parent and child," and I believe that sums it all up.

I started walking just before 6 AM and returned to the trailhead at 4:30 PM. Our team was relatively young, and it seemed we were moving quite fast. The weather was nice that day, and the temperature was high, so wearing a short-sleeve T-shirt and a light windbreaker was just right.
Our guide was a person named Kiyota, who provided a wealth of information throughout the tour without taking breaks, explaining the surrounding trees and sharing stories about Yakushima! He was a really nice person, and everyone seemed to be smiling and having a great time during the tour!
He also made sure to include breaks at appropriate times, so the round trip of 10 and a half hours wasn't as tough as I had expected. There were moments when we had to climb steep slopes and many stairs, but he encouraged us to go at our own pace, which made me feel safe while climbing.
I had wanted to see Jomon Sugi but was a bit anxious about it, and it turned out to be a wonderful memory! When I come back, I hope to have Kiyota as my guide again! Thank you very much!

On Yubu Island, the relaxed demeanor of the water buffalo is truly soothing. The staff were kind and interacted with them in a way that brought out their enthusiasm, which was lovely to see. I was moved by the beauty of nature when I saw the golden chrysalis of the Papilio butterfly in the butterfly garden! The mangrove cruise allows the boat to get quite close, providing a rare view that you can't see in Honshu. In a short amount of time, I was able to efficiently tour the islands, seeing various sights such as the Iriomote Mangrove Cruise, the water buffalo cart in Yufu, and the star sand beach in Taketomi through a bus tour. The buffet lunch was also great. I was back at the ferry terminal by 3:30 PM, which allowed me to take a bus to the Tamatorizaki Observatory. Thank you very much.
短時間で西表マングローブクルーズや由布の水牛者、竹富ではバス観光で星の砂浜等といろいろと見ることが出来る効率の良い島めぐりでした。お昼もビュッフェで良かったです。１５時３０分には離島ターミナルに戻れたので路線バスで玉取崎展望台に行くことができました。ありがとうございました。

I considered sightseeing without a rental car, but since transportation options were limited, I decided to join a tour. It allows you to explore Mishima very efficiently. The stories from the guide and locals are also interesting. The cows do their part moderately well. I think the relaxed atmosphere is largely thanks to the cows moving at their own pace.
