You can choose from six different shapes of glasses, ranging from small sake cups to rock glasses, and you can also opt for colored glasses for an additional fee. There were so many pattern samples that it was hard to decide. First, I practiced with a practice glass to get accustomed to the machine and learn how to carve, and then it was time for the real thing. I was so nervous! I was so focused that time flew by, and at the end, I could take a commemorative photo holding the finished glass. The experience alone was enjoyable, but this time I opted for a plan that included a 30-minute lecture beforehand, where I learned about the history of glasswork and what Edo Kiriko is. Having gained some knowledge before creating, I felt more invested in the process. Both the lecture and the experience were taught very thoroughly, and I was extremely satisfied!

My partner and I were excited to engage in a traditional activity during our trip to Japan. We stumbled on Kuge Crafts on a prominent publication and decided to book, and we were not disappointed. The owners, who have been practising this craft for 40+ years, welcomed us into their home with tea and Japanese treats. The class was an intimate one, with only 4 people at a time, allowing for a more personal experience and ability to ask lots of questions and get a hands on experience. The activity was not rushed, the ceramics provided were very interesting and antique, and they even provided proper packaging to survive the trip home!

The dripping art experience was my first time, and it became a very enjoyable memory.

The motto is free expression in a relaxed state, and they thoroughly create an atmosphere that eases tension with music and drinks (coffee and tea were also available).

The instructor was friendly and explained the steps clearly, so there was no need to worry about how to create the art! I also appreciated that they could take photos for you if you handed them your smartphone.

From mixing the paints to the dripping process, you will definitely get absorbed in it. It might be challenging to finish a piece exactly as you imagined, but I think one of the joys is seeing the final product and comparing it to your vision!

I feel like I want to challenge myself again using what I learned this time, but it seems there are other experiences available as well, so I would like to consider signing up for a different plan next time.

リラックスした状態での自由な表現がモットーになっており、音楽やお酒の用意など、緊張を和らげる雰囲気作りが徹底されています。（コーヒーや紅茶も選択可能でした。）

I enjoyed a delightful afternoon with Yoshiichiro and Yoshiko in their studio. They were so welcoming, treating us to delicious tea and cake as the Kintsugi workshop started. They were extremely helpful, showing us how to do each step but ensuring that we actually did our own project. They also provided detailed information on the materials we would need to buy in order to do our own Kintsugi repairs at home. I highly recommend this workshop!

The class was incredibly fun and informative, and taught by two very patient and knowledgeable instructors. They were welcoming, and immediately made us feel right at home. Neither my husband nor I are very creative, but they were very supportive and encouraging and we had a very fun afternoon. The activity itself was very soothing and relaxing. It was also very clear that they are very proud of their craft and hope to see people continue to try it at home, as they showed us the exact product to buy if we wanted to continue to practice. They even told us it would be OK if we reached out after the class if we had any questions, and to email them pictures of things we are working on should we try kintsugi at home. Highly, highly recommend this class :)

My first experience with pour painting was great! When I showed the staff some image references, they gave me advice on colors and mixtures, which made me feel at ease. There are four types of canvases and a maximum of five colors (you can mix the ten colors however you like), which really sparks your creativity! Since it's a one-time chance art form where you enjoy the colors and patterns that emerge as you tilt the canvas, you can never create the same piece twice, which is part of its charm. You don't need any artistic skills or special techniques, so I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to enjoy authentic art casually! I participated with my spouse, but there were also groups of friends and families with elementary school children, and we all had a wonderful time together!

Imagining the colors we wanted to create was something we don't usually do, so I had a bit of anxiety about whether we could do it, but once we started, the two-hour experience flew by as we became completely absorbed in it. Although we created colors based on our imagination, when we poured them onto the canvas, it didn't turn out as we expected, which was another interesting experience. The shop was full. It's an art experience that everyone, from children to adults, can enjoy.

When I try to do the same thing at home, I often worry about the mess and the working environment, making it difficult to take bold challenges. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our experience; the teacher was so friendly, patient and genuine, and we got to do so many steps when making the ramen bowl. It was not stressful at all, and we wish we had brought our parents along too. Also loved the wide variety of items we could purchase after! So much more meaningful buying from here than Donki / other places whom you don’t know who made them.

Fun, insightful, and calming

Yoshiko sensei is so kind and a master at her craft. Loved learning from her and her husband in their little studio. She gave great pointers, where to buy supplies to continue the practice, and is very happy to answer any questions even in email afterwards. I brought a cracked teapot in hopes she could advise me on how to fix it, but she helped me fix it for a small fee during class! It was such a lovely way to spend an afternoon immersed in a Japanese artistry not known by many. Only tip is that it’s difficult to call an Uber at this location, may need to make sure to make other commute arrangements!

Edo Kiriko Glass Cutting Experience in Asakusa

A unique activity with clear instruction in Japanese and English. Highly recommend!

This was such an awesome experience. I learned so much and would take this again! The instructor spoke English and Japanese, was friendly, patient, and kind. I was able to choose a clear glass (I wanted a pink one but was told I could only choose clear sadly) and they had many additional options for an extra charge (also clear). They have stencils, or you are able to draw free hand on your glass. You are provided a piece of glass to practice on before you attempt your design. The setting was intimate with only 4 cutting machines (there were other studios that were larger on other floors) which I liked because it felt more personal. I didn't need glasses or an apron like I thought I might. You can take photos of your glass when you finish in a lit photo box which makes your pictures look amazing. The room was a little warm for me, but I brought a tiny hand fan with a stand and it was perfect. We were asked to remove our shoes and wear public slippers, so I recommend wearing socks.

Really a hidden gem

I've now been to Yamato Sample twice and tried two different kits, and I can confidently say this is one of the most unique and fun experiences I've had on my trips to the country! This is a good place to both try your hand at crafting as well as learn a bit about techniques used to make realistic food.

The craftsmen that help you are, as you can imagine, incredibly knowledgeable and have a great sense of humor; additionally, they have a nice lil shop near the front that shows some of their more intricate works that are for sale. I have tons of friends that are constantly planning their own trips to Japan and this is one of the few places I always recommend to them.
