I participated in a mangrove canoe and Yubu Island water buffalo cart tour in early January.
In the morning, we had a canoe experience in the mangrove forest. The strong winds made it quite challenging to paddle at first, but once we entered the mangrove area, the wind was blocked, making it much easier to paddle. Although the weather was unfortunately cloudy, I was able to feel the beauty of nature up close and have an extraordinary experience.
For lunch, we went to an Okinawan restaurant recommended by our guide. My wife had the goya champuru set meal, and I had the Yaeyama soki soba.
In the afternoon, we participated in the Yubu Island water buffalo cart tour. The sun peeked out, and we were able to see tropical plants and animals on Yubu Island, as well as touch the water buffalo and take photos, which was a lot of fun.
We joined this tour as part of our honeymoon, and it was a truly wonderful experience that we will cherish together.

1月初旬にマングローブカヌー＋由布島水牛車ツアーに参加しました。
午前中はマングローブ林でのカヌー体験でした。かなりの強風で最初は漕ぐのが大変でしたが、マングローブ林に入ると風が遮断され、漕ぎやすかったです。あいにくの曇天でしたが、大自然を身近に感じながら非日常的な経験ができました。
お昼はガイドの方に教えていただいた沖縄料理の店で妻はゴーヤチャンプル定食、私は八重山ソーキそばを食べました。
午後は由布島水牛車ツアーに参加しました。午後からは晴れ間も見え、由布島で熱帯の動植物を見たり、水牛に触れて写真を撮る体験もでき、非常に楽しめました。
新婚旅行での参加でしたが、二人で心に残る非常に素晴らしい体験ができました。

マングローブカヌーは確実に服（特にズボン）が濡れるため濡れても乾きやすい服装と着替えが必要です。カヌーツアー終了後にツアー会社のシャワー室でシャワーと着替えができます。

I participated in a half-day mangrove tour on January 6, 2026. Due to changes in the weather, my wife and I were unsure until the day before, but when I consulted with them, I was relieved to hear that it was fine to decide by 6 PM the day before.
They also contacted me to confirm the schedule for the day, and despite it being my first tour in Iriomote Island, I felt very secure and enjoyed it a lot. I would like to rely on them again when I visit Ishigaki Island.

It was a highly satisfying tour where I could fully enjoy the natural beauty characteristic of Miyako Island. The clarity of the ocean was beyond my expectations, and I was thrilled to see sea turtles up close while snorkeling! The Pumpkin Cave was even more impressive in person than in photos, and spending time in that quiet space was very pleasant. Canoeing was physically manageable, allowing us to progress leisurely while enjoying the scenery. The guide's explanations and attentiveness were just right, making me feel secure throughout the entire experience, which left a great impression! Thank you to the charming and dandy bearded gentlemen, Gen-chan and Ryoma! 😊

My wife and I participated in a tour together. We decided to join because it was possible to participate until the age of 70, but I have some mountain climbing experience while my wife is almost a beginner. From the start of the trek on the trolley path, she was a bit slow, and once we finished the trolley path and began the actual climb, it became quite challenging to keep up.
The guide informed us that at this pace, we wouldn't make it back to the bus on time, and that beginners should sign up for a private tour. I managed to carry my wife's backpack, and we somehow made it to Jomon Sugi.
Additionally, there were other beginners in the group, and we found ourselves in a situation where we needed to put on crampons due to the snowy conditions. However, the guide only handed out the crampons and did not assist with putting them on.
According to the climbing app, our pace was about 110-120% of the average. I think it would have been better if the usual sightseeing explanations were shortened and adjusted to the participants' skill levels, allowing for a slower pace.
I hope that in the pre-registration information, they can specify the required climbing skills so that participants can determine whether they are capable of joining.
Despite the difficulties, I was moved by the sight of Jomon Sugi.
妻と2人でツアーに参加しました
70歳迄ツアー参加可能ということで参加を決めたのですが、私は登山経験有りで妻は殆ど初心者。行きのトロッコ道を歩く時から少し遅れ気味だったのですが、トロッコ道を終え、本格的に登り始めるところからついていくのがかなり厳しかったです
ガイドからこのペースだと帰りのバスに間にあわない、初心者は個別ツアーに申し込むべきだと告げられました
妻のザックを私が担いであがる事でなんとか縄文杉までは到着しました
また、他にも登山初心者の方が参加されていたの雪道でアイゼンを付けなければならない状態だったのですが、ガイドはアイゼンを渡すだけで付け方を手伝うことはありませんでした
登山アプリでの行動ペースは一般の110〜120%となっており、普段実施されている観光説明を参加者のスキルにあわせて短くし、ゆっくり目に歩いてあげる様な配慮もあってよかったと思います
申し込みの事前告知に求める登山スキルを記載して、参加者がこれなら参加できる、できないの判断ができる様にしてくれる事を望みます
苦しくても見ることの出来た縄文杉には感動しました。

As expected from a large tour company, it was great that reservations and cancellations were possible even the day before, providing a high level of flexibility, which made it reassuring to book considering the weather and other factors. Additionally, I took advantage of a campaign from VELTRA that offered one person free, making it more affordable.
The communication felt quite business-like, and it seemed they were following a manual diligently. I participated in a half-day kayak tour, and the hotel pick-up was smooth. There were five participants kayaking on the calm waters of the Urauchi River.
There seemed to be many guides available, and our guide was knowledgeable, explaining the names of various plants and allowing us to fully enjoy the nature of Iriomote Island. While I think kayaking and SUP tours in Ishigaki Island might be slightly cheaper, I believe that if you're going to do it, the more majestic nature of Iriomote Island is the better choice.
I deducted one star because, despite it being an unusually sunny day in winter on Iriomote Island with no strong winds, we were switched from the desired SUP to kayaking due to weather reasons. I could only think it was because we were the only participants for the SUP, and they wanted to consolidate us into one tour. This assumption was reinforced when I happened to meet local tour operators at an izakaya that night, who mentioned that it was a nice day and that they could have easily done the SUP.
Additionally, I was disappointed that not many personal photos were taken; there was one where someone had their eyes closed, and we only received one or two usable photos, which was very few. I hope that next time we can do the SUP.

半日カヤックツアーに参加しましたが、ホテル送迎もスムーズでした。穏やかな流れの浦内川でのカヤックで5人参加していました。
沢山のガイドさんがいるようですが、ガイドさんの知識は豊富で植物の名前等よく説明して下さり、西表の自然を堪能できました。
石垣島でもマングローブでのカヤックやsupツアーはやや安くできると思いますが、折角なら自然がより雄大な西表島の方がいいかと思います。
星を一つ減らしたのは、風が全然強くなく、冬の西表島では珍しく晴天の日だったにもかかわらず、天候を理由に希望していたsupではなくカヤックにされてしまった事です。
sup参加者が私達だけで、一つのツアーにまとめて集約したいからなんだろうなとしか思えませんでした。というのも、この日の夜以前supツアーでお世話になった地元のツアー業者の方々に居酒屋で偶々お会いし、今日どこに行ったという話になったのですが、今日はいい天気で全然supできたよと皆さん言われていました。
また、個人写真をあまり撮って下さらず、1人が目を瞑っていたり、使える写真が1、2枚程度で非常に少なかったのでがっかりしました。
是非次回はsupができたらなと思います。

At first, the kids said it was dark and scary, but after a while, they became engrossed in searching for various creatures like insects, fish, and coconut crabs. It was a pity that we couldn't find a coconut crab, but it seems they had a lot of fun. The weather was nice all day, so we could see the moon and stars beautifully. The arrival day was cloudy and felt a bit cold. I was worried about the snorkeling reservation, but once we got out to sea, the water was warm, and since we were wearing wetsuits and shoes, it was totally fine.
They put two wetsuits on my 9-year-old child, which was great because I was worried he would get cold. Thanks to that, he didn't feel cold at all and had a lot of fun.
The guide (Makocchan) explained the swimming points and precautions clearly, and I really appreciate it. During the return transfer, he talked about recommended island cuisine, which made the whole experience enjoyable.

I was curious if there was a place to do SUP or kayaking in such a town, but once I got here, I found myself paddling along a wide river surrounded by Okinawan plants.
As a traveler, I wanted to find a place where I could experience this without any gear, but since most places offer similar services, I recommend checking their websites thoroughly. There were changing rooms available, and the parking lot can accommodate five cars.
One thing to note is that your bottom will definitely get wet while kayaking. Experiencing this in January can be quite cold, and there's a possibility of rain. If you can prepare, you might need rain gear for both your top and bottom. However, when I mentioned to the staff that I didn't have any rain gear and didn't want to get wet during my trip, they kindly lent me rain pants for free. They also provided shoes. However, a towel is essential, as you'll need it to dry your feet afterward. I brought a towel that I didn't mind throwing away during my travels.
We paddled back and forth on a river about 300 meters long. Along the way, we listened to explanations from the staff. The distance was short, but we enjoyed a leisurely paddle on the kayak. This time in January was relatively cold, but in the summer, there are no trees to provide shade, so it will definitely be hot. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great in the morning, but thanks to that (?), we had an exhilarating and thrilling canoe experience. The stories we heard about Iriomote Island during our travels and while on the canoe were very interesting and enjoyable. (Especially the stories about the traffic lights on the island and the mangroves and salinity.) In the afternoon, the weather improved, and we were able to relax and enjoy a soothing time on Yufu Island under a beautiful blue sky. Throughout the day, we fully experienced both the harshness and warmth of nature.

In winter, it seems that the ferry from Ishigaki Island to Uehara Port often gets canceled, but the tour company provided a thorough explanation about this in advance, which made it easy for us to participate. It was really helpful.
I wasn't expecting much from the canoeing due to the bad weather, but wearing a raincoat made it surprisingly enjoyable! The experience is quite different from a sunny day, and I liked that.
Yubu Island also had many unexpected attractions. The water buffalo were cute, but the botanical garden, where we could enjoy the tropical atmosphere, was really great.
冬は石垣島→上原港便が欠航になることが多いらしく、その辺りの対応含めて事前にツアー会社さんから丁寧な説明があり、スムーズに参加できました。本当に助かりました。
悪天候でカヌーも期待してなかったのですが、レインコートを着ていれば案外楽しめますね！晴の日とは違った感じも良いです。
由布島も意外と見所がたくさんあって、水牛も可愛いですが、南国感が楽しめる植物園がとても良かったです。
