The huge tournaments take place three times a year in Tokyo, and this is your chance to see it. Only available in January, May, and September, this full day pageant of athleticism is Japan's national sport. Once, sumo was a performance meant to serve as entertainment for the Shinto gods. Then it became popular in the imperial courts, where matches were fought for the pleasure of emperors. Modern professional sumo wrestling can trace its roots back to the Edo Period in Japan, as a form of sporting entertainment. You will start with a visit to Tokyo’s Sumo Museum, then off to the Kokugikan to experience the excitement the big tournament.       An individual seat will not be provided. Please have them sit on the lap of their parent or guardian. If there are seats available, they are welcome to use it, however they will not be getting a priority in seating.

    • Please note that you may have to wait to be ushered to your seat if the following cases: during a sumo match, during the ring entering procession of the Makuuchi division wrestlers, during the ring entering procession of the Yokozuna, during the sanyakusoroibumi ritual stomping ceremony, or during a speech by the Sumo Association. You will be shown to your seat after they are finished.
    • Spectators can go for a rest or grab a bite to eat at one of the arena vendors, even if a sumo match is underway.
    • Please refrain from bringing food and drinks into the arena. Please purchase food and refreshments from the vendors inside the arena.
    • Audio guides or translators are not available.
    • Vegetarian meals are available with advance notice.
    • Same day meal changes and same day vegetarian requests are not accepted.
