Sumo (literally, "striking each other") is undoubtedly one of the many iconic facets of Japan. At first glance, it may simply look like a simple game of two gargantuan men pushing each other in a ring, but do not be deceived. Sumo is an intricate and serious sport which demands rigorous discipline and commitment from sumo wrestlers (also called rikishi).

No trip to Japan is complete without sumo, and this is the best way to get a first-hand glimpse into the rituals, training and power of these incredible athletes. See real sumo up-close as you watch their daily morning practice. The early morning training bouts start with the lowest ranking wrestlers practicing against their stable mates in the ring and progressively, the more powerful, high-ranking wrestlers will take over.

Take this chance and watch as the wrestlers prepare for the tournaments. See the underlying grace coursing through each calculated movement before ending in explosive power. At the end of the training sessions, hopefully you will have newfound appreciation for the exquisite sportsmanship and athleticism that sumo entails.

After practice is over, stop for a chat and take a few pictures with the rikishi, along with your friendly guide.
